Swear and Cussing on BTVS and Angel

I've heard that BBC had to bleep Spike out a couple times. I don't know on what words though.

I know in "Hush" when Anya made the finger/hole gesture to Xander that the WB wanted it cut at first, but allowed it after they came to the conclusion that it was too funny (this according to Joss).

Joss has always said that the WB was concerned with many things on the show, but never censored them the way he thought they would. They would get nervous about something, and then they'd be "oh...ok...fine" about it after some deliberation.

Last nite I watched the last ep of Buffy Season 2 when Buffy is talking to Spike and she calls Dru a big ho. LMAO Very Happy

I like when they do part of the word...and then they cut to the next scene. They did that once with Glory in 'Blood Ties' when she gets sent into the air, and she's like, "OH, SHI-"

And then Buffy in 'Life Serial'. "What the FU-"

I remember Joss saying when the show first started, WB wasn't sure who they were aiming for as an audience, and really didn't want Buffy saying "Hi, I'm an enormous slut" in the preimere, and with the mentioning of 'virgin' in Teacher's Pet. Since then, they've lightened up though.

And there's a lot of British slang (mostly from Spike but sometimes from Wesley or Giles) that might make some folks blush if they knew what it really meant.

As far as when Spike called Doyle a "Mick", I don't see why the WB would have a problem with it. (Especially seeing as the WB was supposed to be oh so cool when they started. *Sarcasm OD*)
I've seen numerous show, usually NY, Chicago and Boston-based cop dramas, where the word is thrown around like the word "cop" in some eps. Especially seeing as the WB was supposed to be oh so cool when they started. *Sarcasm

This is kind of off topic, but it's bugged me for awhile now. (Before I continue, let me just say that there are a few words in the world that I hate and never use, and this is one of them). When they show the movie "Die Hard With a Vengeance" on regular tv or basic cable, they change the wording on the sign that Bruce Willis' character is forced to wear. (if you haven't seen the movie, a terrorist threatens to kill innocent people via bombs unless BW's character completes these odd tasks he gives him. The 1st one, is that BW's character go stand on a busy area of a Harlem neaghborhood in just his boxers wearing a big-ass sandwich sign with the sentance " I hate N******" on it. I loathe the word, but the irony and ridiculousness of it made me laugh my ass off) In the edited version, Bruce is just made to stand around in Harlem wearing a sign that said " I hate everybody", or something similar.

What I don't get, is that you can hear the word used on all kinds of different shows: reruns of the "Jeffersons", "Jerry Springer" and the aforementioned myriad of cop shows. Since that's the case, then why change the DHWV sign to something that doesn't make sense to the scene?

And as far as the BBC editing some of Spike's lines, some of the words he uses as a Brit may mean nothing to us "Bloody Yanks", but some are considered curse words over there.

While I was never shocked at the language on "Buffy" I was kind of surprised they were able to strongly imply Buffy was performing oral sex on Spike in the episode where she's invisible. They're arguing (as usual), then he looks down and says something like, "That's cheating." I was sitting there thinking, "I can see the angry letters now."
