#11 · Jul 17, 2004What I appreciate most about the rants is that they get me thinking about points I hadn't previously considered. So I consider this one to be highly successful. And largely even rational. Wink It got me thinking, anyway, which leads to the verbose so apologizing in advance but maybe I can help explain. Because S6 was far and away my favorite. But I see how it made many, the Site God included, just wince.
One thing that captivated me about S6 was that Sarah put in her very best performances, as a whole, in S6. Maybe because the darkness of the season forced her to draw deeper from her own undelved darkness, I don't know. And everyone who liked Spike in any way found him hardest to deal with when he was Buffy's lap dog, like through so much of S5 (and early S6). Then Buffy restored some of his power- to fight demons, to fight her, and he had captivated a piece of her. When Spike has power, he is fascinating. We wanted to see Sarah as Buffy, and James as Spike (also putting in his best work as a whole), together. What we got was Spuffy. And Spuffy-mania ensued. NO, it is not what we really wanted- that ended the moment he said, "I knew the only thing better than killing a Slayer was-" But like Buffy, and Spike, we hoped, we dreamed. We wanted to believe he was more than the Evil Dead. Certainly we were disappointed when at times he would rise above and be who we wanted Buffy to have, then he would fall back to his depths and be who Buffy thought she deserved. It was exhilarating and horrifying. What a fun ride it was, though, what a fun ride. Their chemistry was electric. And electrifying to watch. And that's part of why the Spuffymania. *shrugs* The visceral is so hard to explain. Or back down from. Twisted Evil
