As promised, or should I say threatened, here is the long-awaited (or is that marginally anticipated) thread where we can celebrate all things Captain Cardboard. Let's face it, he wasn't the worst thing to happen to Buffy (see death, weevil Parker). Besides, he served a purpose. Think of all the wonderful moments we would have missed:
The Angel/Riley scenes (such a wonderful treat to see Angel all possessive and Grrr).
The steamy sex of Where The Wild Things Are. (block it out! block it out!)
The whining of S5, although he did nail it at the end of The Replacement ("She doesn't love me"). A pure acting moment if ever there was one.
The Vampire Hoes who Suck for Cash (who woulda thunk it!).
The joyful S7 reunion... and the wife.
The Helicopter Scene!
Oh hell, why am I even trying? We all know that I'm reaching here. [i[But[/i], I still say we give Riley too hard a time. So, let's give the boy some love!
Who's with me?

I will agree he was a hell of a lot better than Parker, even though that's not really hard.
And the Angel/Riley fight scenes were AWESOME!!!!! Mmmm... Angel...
*peeks out to say* Er, also (am so living on the edge & well, being pedantic to boot), wasn't the helicopter during the "Orange Uniform" wearing stage ie S6???
*goes further under cover & call MechaDawn in for backup*

I could have sworn Riley didn't come back until S7. But maybe it was 6, now that I think on it. Didn't he walk in on InvisiBuffy and Spike? Oh, hell. All of Riley's scenes seem the same.

Riley's return was S6, but not the invisiBuffy ep. He did, however, walk in on Buffy and Spike in bed together. *shudders*
I simply need more Ruffy-inspired tribute-ey goodness in my life. While I may teeter-totter on the fence of Spuffiness, I still didn't hate Riley as much as he rest of everyone.
But he's such a fun target!
Poor Marc Blucas.

On a serious note, as a character, Riley was given the short end of the stick to facilitate the end of Season 5. He wasn't hard on the eyes, and the annoying behaviour started in S5. I wonder if Joss had hit set up to be the fall guy all the time, or if it was one of those "last minute" story decisions, like making Faith go bad.

See, that's what I'm talking about, right there!
Thanks for not being a hater, Fiat.
I also wonder what happened during the writing of S5. I think that to keep Riley around would have made it all very boring. Buffy's fate was very unsure... both the character and the show. Once the network switch was on, something had to give. I think that if Riley had stayed, S6 would have been, well, not as interesting. Would Riley have waited? Would he have allowed Willow to bring Buffy back? Would he have stayed once she was? Would make interesting alternate universe fanfic.
Either way, Buffy and Spike woulda happened... just like Buffy and Angel will happen over and over... once she's done baking.
Of course, I haven't read any of the S8 comic (needing to lay off the non-essential expenses) (what?!, I say, Buffy is not essential) but I am saving up.

Riley COULD have been interesting... what made him join the Initiative? What was his first experience with a demon? Do his parents know? It's been a while since I watched S4-5, but they flirted with giving him dimensions, which leads me back to the idea that his character became a sacrificial pig to help propell the ending.
and since we ARE in a shipper thread... would a Riley/Tara ship have worked? (assuming a few changes, obviously)

I think perhaps a Riley/Tara ship could have worked, but not for very long. Not in Tara's true nature. I often flip-flop between the Oz/Willow and Willow/Tara. Both ships were so wonderful and different and perfect in their ways.

I don't really see a Riley/Tara. I could maybe see a Riley/Willow. MAYBE.
I could see Riley falling for Harmony somehow. That would have been funny.
Riley and Harm could have been a hoot. And plausible, although not for very long because I think even Riley would have gotten bored of Harmony after a little while.

Yeah, but it would have been very entertaining while it lasted. For some reason I just pictured Harmony and Riley as Lucy and Desi.
LOL Harmony would have been Riley's rebound girl... unless he stuck with the "vamp suckage" fix of his.
To be fair to Riley, he needs someone who can both stand up to him, but still needs to be taken care of. Under the right circumstances, Riley/Willow might have almost worked.

I just wanted to point out, thanks to the fine folks at Whedonesque, that tomorrow is my favorite boys birthday. ;)
So let's all wish Buffy's true (human) soul mate a happy birthday by sitting in The Bronze and having a good pout. :D
