Hey everyone,

Okay. I know I'm aging and my synapses are not what they used to be. I was hoping you don't mind answering (& of course no pressure ), but what are we all working as? How do we feed ourselves/pay mortgages/procure dollars or even cents to pay fuel costs?

I've got ideas in my head, but I think people have switched jobs/careers & my head is at times in repeats. :?

I'll start.

I'm still a registered primary (elementary) teacher, but am in hiatus (they were SO mean ).

So now I'm working in a plastics factory, as an industry trainer/teacher. This means I spend my days doing literacy training & representing the education organisation that processes plastics processing traineeships/apprenticeships. The amusing in that is LegoKing teasing me about my steelcaps & earmuffs, not to mention the no jewellry or nailpolish rules. Oh yeah, and hairnets. :o

When I'm not doing that, I'm also an adult education (both ESL & disability adults) literacy & numeracy relief teacher.

Your turn.

Was doing liturgy / liturgical music work in California, but churches around here are about 20 years behind the times, so right now I just sing in the church choir. :(

Otherwise, doing admin work for public transit.

Well the past two years were spent working as a substitute teacher K-12 while going for my BA in Elementary Education. Hats off to all substitutes - it's challenging to fill in someone else's shoes.

So this will be the first year as a teacher of my own classroom (second grade). I'm a little nervous about second grade - I've spent so much time in kindergarten classrooms I've become this Mary Sunshine of the Sing-A-Longs, finger painting, and planned hug attacks. Who would've guessed? Anyway, I'm also going to school full time for my master's degree.

So school basically owns my soul.

Now running the weirdest office in all of Los Angeles plus our sister office in OC and our newest in Miami. Pay is decent, lots of little "bonuses"

I screen print t-shirts full time nights while going to school part time in the mornings/early afternoons. I'm going for my BA in English to become a book editor. Screen printing gets me by for now and isn't all that bad. I actually kind of like it.

Right now, I'm working at McDonald's and substitute teaching until I can find a job in 7-12 English in the Cleveland area which seems next to impossible. I'm tired at working at McDonald's but at least it's a paycheck. I am attending my first class this summer (major bore) on my way to getting a masters in library science for school media specialist. I want to find a new job so that I can finally move out. I need to!

Boy, I wish I could get paid for attending Indians games and watching Grady!! That would be the LIFE!!! :D

Was a coordinator for a NIH educational training grant but YEAH! next August I will be back in the classroom teaching Chemistry and Science to 10th grade students. I am thrilled.

Wow we have a load of teachers here.
What do you do when the one thing you need to save your life is the one thing that would make life unbearable?

I am a web designer, currently getting to do most of my work in the comfort of my own home....which is sweet as hell. I basically keep my own hours (depending on the client, it can be a 12-14 hour day...but sometimes it can be 2...so I don't complain). Business is slow this month, but I think it'll pick up again pretty soon.

It does help to put some label on the people so it feels that you know them more. If not they are just names, unless you know the person personally. Good idea, Glori!

Given I've had to repeatedly remember to not use people's real names has been fun in the new improved HMC. I was having vague memories but getting some people mixed up as to who did what. The New Beginnings is usually the northern hemisphere's work day......I remember waaaaaaaaaaay back when I was up er, very, no, exceedingly late & would be able to regularly join in & remember who was where & doing what. Now days, I've discovered it is wise to get sleep . Whoda thunk !

So rather then send myself spare I did the thread.

I run the grill at a drive-in restaurant called Swenson's so I get to come home every day covered in grease and smelling like hamburgers. Yippee. I'm also in library school getting my Master's in library science with a focus in young adult librarianship. Hopefully I'll graduate in May and get a job in a library so I'll never have to smell like a burger again.

Social worker. I work at a nationally known non-profit in the dial-a-social-worker department. Seriously. People call, I do evaluations on the phone and refer accordingly w/the occasional follow-up or advocacy/outreach. Good times.
I love lamp.

Currently the wearer of 1000 hats.

We are undergoing a management reorganization at the hotel in which I work. Currently, my name tag says "assistant manager" of dining services, but next week it might say Speakeasy Manager. I have no idea and after a 60 hour week, don't care. It's my one day off.

I also sing with my husband in The Book Bus Band, which promotes early childhood literacy. http://www.bookbusband.com We are working on a school assembly program so that I can quite the dining room gig.

I am also currently directing the annual summer musical at our local performing arts center. We're doing The Wizard of Oz, which you think would be easy because everyone knows the movie, but moving 20 5 to 12 year old munchkins around is hell. Don't know what I was thinking... except that I love it.

What else, as though there could be more, no, I think that's it... until October when the horror flick starts. Might be doing a little PA and extra work on that one.

I miss making movies, man.

Doc, I was actually aware of that issue when I first put the thread up, but, I figure you lot all know you way round the lil internet & wouldn't give it up 8-).

Never made movies. Glad I didn't - industry that'd be highly addictive (up until I was about 19 was determined to be a film editor, til my father talked me out of it; in the sense that he told me I'd have to move to America as there were only 6 film editors working in Oz at the time we are talking  . Different story now).

SS - I'm jealous!!! I miss theatre quite a bit, even the insanity of dealing with the kids. I got asked to "stage manage" a children's theatre show once... Oliver and yes, there was a chorus of 5-7 year olds. Cutest lil munchkins but man, did it ever take some creative thinking to deal with them in the wings. (That and a couple good parents to shepherd them from the dressing rooms to their places.)

Doc - NE now, huh? COOL!!! I'll file that info away to impress a couple coworkers.

Hmmmm ,can't say I miss working on movies that much - especially after working with that tool Singer on Superman Returns - the hours really did bad things to my head.

I kinda dig working in TV now, mainly because I can actually so camera work.(and I don't have to work on moronic 'reality' shows - well so far anyway). I'm also involved in production resources at the ABC (Aust Broadcasting Corp.) which is really interesting work.

Glori - Its your thread, so I'll post in it (even though it's been quiet for while)! I work for a charity that provides counselling, education, career advice etc to the under privelleged and homeless people in my area, as well as those who are looking to return to work after 'career breaks'. I have two roles, I work on reception and I teach computer classes for beginners.

It's not what I want to do forever, but I'm happy enough for the time being. Ultimately, I would like to go back to the hotel industry.
