So....whose watched it?

I've seen the 1st episode. Took some time due to the site crashing & new servers being required (not to mention it also overwhelmed whedonesque forum too) .

Looking forward to seeing ep. 2 (releasing 17th aka tomorrow in my world).

Comments? :?

Well Glori, you can read my review right here. :)

Have read & generally agreed. I think they did the casting spot on. Somewhere (been reading too much but want to say the LA Times article) was said to be a very low six figure amount.....not sure how accurate that is.

I wonder how much they had planned on people viewing.

Bad Horse......what's not to love about singing cowboys!

Definitely fun & silly -cause that is a good thing to have more of!

I just watched it. Laughed. Called my husband to the basement. Watched again...forcing him to watch too. We both laughed.

Overall I was impressed. I had no idea Neil Patrick Harris could sing like that! He was absolutely perfect for the part of Dr. Horrible.

My only complaint was that it was a little slow at the beginning. But as soon as the scene changed to the laundromat and NPH started to sing, I was hooked! And I agree with Glori, what's not to love about singing cowboys! LOL!

Val, you watch in the basement  .....

Apparently NPH has done some Broadway music theatre (I learnt that from my other half cause he knows stuff like - music theatre that is *LMAO*)...I want to say Sherlock Holmes - can't remember what the role was. Apparently quite a good job was done.

The story's fun, but I thought Felicia Day was the only person who could actually sing. There were only a couple of lines from "You're Gonna Die" in Part 2 where I thought Neil Patrick Harris was good, but most of his singing was nothing special. And Nathan Fillion was horrible. The non-singing acting has been great, though.

Here's my very small review of part 2.

I actually like NPH's voice in the songs. I agree that Nathan isn't that good at singing, but his Captain Hammer is so great, it doesn't really matter. It's not like they're giving him a load of the songs anyway. Most of it's been sung by Day and Harris.

I think if Nathan could sing really well it'd take away from the whole Cap'n Hammer persona. Was hilarious trying to watch How I Met Your Mother (same day here as Ep II came online)...I kept half expecting the goggles & white gloves to appear  .

I'm being impatient for Ep III (waiting for the US to get to the 19th.....sheeesh! )

Well, a half-hour of build-up. Then five minutes to completely ruin the story.

Here's my review of Act III.

To say I am absolutely disappointed by the effort is an understatement.

I agree Matt about the "plot" twist cop out ending of well huh what to do now....

Let's shock them.

I have just been there done that too many times with Joss.
What do you do when the one thing you need to save your life is the one thing that would make life unbearable?

It's starting to become Joss' signature and that's making him a little predictable. But I still loved the whole feel of it.

Okay, now you lot have finally had a chance *LMAO* (the tortures of time zones). Maybe it's the depression talking but I certainly didn't feel the punch of "urgh, ripped off" that seems to be the mood. Then again, I'm having problems feeling anything, so *shrug*.

The final act was okay 'til "The Big Number" by Nathan - then it kinda went off the rails for me & came back on when he was walking through the room in his red outfit & meeting Bad Horse (now...come on there's an actor LMAO). The bit in the middle (ie the 'shock') didn't jar as I didn't even register it. Was kind of a blimp in the narrative - like an offshoot tangent.

I'm going to stop now cause I think I'm rambling more than usual :? .

I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about. the whole second act prepares us for him to kill somebody. It is great and hit two birds with one stone:

1. Gets him into the Evil League of Evil (LMAO A Horse, two crazy chicks, Drew Goddard and Doug Peitrie? Awesome, BTW Marti Noxon and David Fury kick even more ass)

2. Kill the only link he had to actually being a somewhat decent person. He was always seriously planning on ruling the world, even though he had a crush on someone, which the story focused on the most.

Plus him going to the Evil League of Evil at the end is one of the funniest parts of the whole movie, and that is supposedly the "serious" and depressing tone you are talking about because that same song starts with her death. Yes it sucked she died, but whatever, its not that important. Its just one maybe 30 second part of the series. Its not a perfect and genius thing. But Ive seen it more than once and i enjoy the hell out of it.

"We saw the operation you tried to pull today. But your humiliation say's he still votes Nay' (haha if u listen closely you hear a real horse haha)
And now assassination is just the only way.....
There will be blood,
It might be yours,
So go kill someone.

Signed

Bad Horse!"

Thanks for the lyrics Joey - with my hearing I was only catching every other word (drives me nuts & a reason I love subtitles .... *lol* amazing how much I miss).

Actually I didn't get that she died :o, well, not until they put her on the stretcher (& all my brain coped with was 'er, that seems uncomfortable position to hold for the actress *LMAO*). As I said I watched it in a very 'off the planet' state of mind. So I wasn't shocked, more unaware (though again I say that could just be my synapses talking).

I agree re the Evil League of Evil on the funny (it was enough to jolt me back to the story *lol*). On first viewing, I actually re-watched the part from the costume colour change.

I'm looking forward to getting a better streamed/downloaded version (*grumbling about iTunes for the US & Canada only still*).....my viewing was very jolty with only short clear runs. The joys of internet streaming  .

To me, it felt completely flat at the end, even the scene with the evil league of evil. It's not that he killed someone that really bothers me. If he had killed her in a funny way, then it would keep with the general tone of the movie. The problem is, the tone of the third act gets serious and becomes something different when Penny dies. Thus it kills the comedic momentum towards the end. By the time we finally got to see Bad Horse, I just rolled my eyes and didn't care because I was so annoyed at how he didn't keep with the theme of the other acts.

Yeah, Bad Horse told him to go kill someone.....that message was delivered in a funny way.....just like the third act needed to be: funny. You automatically assume the death of whomever (even Penny) should be funny, but apparently he doesn't know how to do that.

It was all sorts of bad, in my opinion.

Matt- I can definitely see where it would throw you off. It was light-hearted the whole way through and then because very serious for that moment. I just am assuming he had to wrap it up quickly and this was the most logical way to do it to propel the story to a conclusion.

Having to "wrap it up quickly" is a byproduct of bad storytelling. That's all I have to say.

Yeah, its definitely the big thing I have against Prophecy Girl. In an otherwise perfect episode, he ends up finishing it all off in one swift swoop in the last act and it feels very rushed. But I wonder if its his fault or just the people with the money saying he doesn't have more time to finish it. I'm sure if Prophecy Girl for example was a two hour finale, it would have just plain been perfect.

But even though her death was sudden and unexpected, he still wraps things up fairly nicely in the end and it all makes sense in the way i described in my first post.

That's my complaint exactly. The first two parts are comedy. The last part is serious drama. That 180 just killed the entire thing for me. Have Penny turn out to also be a supervillain or something. Keep it lighthearted. I mean, wasn't this project done for fun? Joss calling his friends during the writer's strike and saying, "Hey come on over. I have this fun little thing my brothers and I wrote?" To make it depressing at the end just didn't work for me.

I had an overall favorable reaction to all of Dr. Horrible. I was a little disappointed that Penny died, but I thought it made sense in the context of the story. It was the story of Dr. Horrible's origins, so it makes sense that something had to happen to change him from an evil-doer wannabe to truly evil.

By the way, Stephenie Meyer (author of the Twilight books and currently my goddess) mentioned Dr. Horrible on her Myspace page. She called it "Genius".

Hot off the press from Comic-Con.

I was watching G4 report on Comic Con and they just mentioned that there will be a part 4 of Dr. Horrible's sing-along blog.
